Class Title: Beyond Beginning Dyeing: Combining Methods Class Number: 26 Instructor: Ann Johnston Session: Session IV Dates: June 22- June 26 Level: Intermediate to Advanced Tuition: $475.00 Additional Class Fee: $90
Description This class must be taken in conjunction with class # 33. This class is only offered as a 7 day class This class is for: For students who have done both immersion dyeing and painting and printing with Procion MX dyes or for the person who has enough experience with dyes to have advanced questions about how best to adapt them to his or her own uses. Ann has designed this class especially for the artists who attend QSDS. She will start with a brief review of all key techniques including printing, painting, varying wet and dry layers, and resist. Ann will demonstrate combinations of dye methods and help students decide in what order to use them. Class members will chose their focus on particular techniques and explore the variations they present. They will be expected to set goals according to their own specific design Sewing Machine Required No Required Materials to Bring • 4-5 yards 100%cotton, rayon, silk, WELL WASHED. Be sure this is a fabric that dyes well. • 1-2 yards of your own fabric painted or printed with dye, for introductions • 3-4 yards of your own hand dyed fabric (any method). LIGHT values for over-dyeing • To cover table top and for painting surface, white shower curtain and heavy plastic • 1-2 light weight plastic drop cloths to cover fabric peices (8'x12'to cut up) • 1 set plastic measuring spoons and one set DRY measures • 2 one cupcup plastic liquid measures • masking tape • optional to bring several widths • Heavy permanent black marker to lavel fabric • scissors to cut plastic • several pairs rubber gloves and paint clothes and /or apron • for clean up - plastic containers to rinse brushes, absorbant paper towels, rags and old towel • 6-10 plastic spoons and forks and one sturdy long handled plastic spoon • double sided tape and a glue stick • 12 or more quart or gallon zip lock bags, and several tall white kitchen garbage bags • Mixing/dyeing containers: -10 or more 1-cup plastic containers and lids (like wide mouth yogurt cups - disposible is the easiest) - 6 or more 2-cup plastic containers and lids (like cottage cheese) - 4 1-quart plastic containers, wide mouth (like cottage cheese) • 3 half gallon buckets (approximately) or basins, not larger • 2-3 flat plastic containers for dyeing 1/2-2" deep, any shape, long, rectangular, square disposable o.k. (like meat trays or drawer organizers) • 2-3 firm dense foam rollers with handles, assorted sizes • 2 or more paint trays or flat palettes or plastic plates for the rollers • 3 or more 1" sponge brushes and a few larger sizes • other paint brushes, assorted sizes, bristle, nylon, etc. • one or more textured sponges • any wood blocks, or other stamps or printing materials that YOU HAVE MADE -a texture for impressing a design, any firm plastic or wood with distinct texture or shapes, preferably one that relates to designs you like or use • 1 or more pieces rigid Plexiglas, any size or shape under 8" for making printing blocks Optional Materials to Bring 2 or more pieced blocks- possibly from previous projects, at least 10" square or a small pieced top you don't plan to finish • light colors for over dyeing any other dyeable fabrics you would like to use Matching pairs of shapes for clamping, rigid plastic or wood. 4 or more strong spring clamps (binder clamps, bulldog clamps or C clamps Materials Instructor Will Bring Fabric: 5 yards, assorted mercerized cottons Dyes, premeasured in squeeze bottles Soda, Print Paste Mix, Urea, Synthrapol, Corn dextrin Various printing and painting tools Students may wish to purchase additional supplies that Ann will bring: fabric, dyes, auxiliaries, miscellaneous printing and painting tools.
